Abstract
A pot experiment was carried out to study effect of four water deficit levels, viz. serious water deficit (SD, 35% ~ 45% θf, θf field water capacity), medium water deficit (MD, 45% ~ 55% θf), mild water deficit (LD, 55% ~ 65% θf) and normal irrigation (CK, 65% ~ 80% θf) at the seedling – early joining stage, later joining – booting stage and booting – flowering stage of maize crop, on the photosynthetic rate, yield and water use efficiency of sticky maize. The results showed that water deficit decreased photosynthetic rate, transpiration rate, dry matter accumulation and grain yield at all growth stages of corn plant. In comparison with the well-watered control, SD significantly decreased both dry matter accumulation and yield. However, LD and LD did not significantly decrease yield but reduced total water consumptions by 10.75~19.85%.
