  The new two-line hybrid rice variety TH8-3 (T7S-8/R3) has been recognizedastesting variety by Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Developmentin2010because it combines early maturity, high yield (6.0-8.0 tons/hectare), good lodging resistance and high grain quality. The yield of F1seed production is notyethigh becausethe parental linesare notcompletelypure and instable in terms of critical sterility temperature. Four successiveexperiments were conducted in growth chamber to screen/select female lines that havecritical sterility inducing temperature ≤ 240C,concurrently maintainheterosis of T7S-8/R3hybrid combination. Suitable planting dates and technical measures for F1seed production were also identified. These results can serve as basis to establish protocol for female line multiplication and procedure for hybrid seed production.

  Dòng mẹ bất dục đực TGMS 103S sinh trưởng phát triển tốt trong điều kiện sản xuất hạt lai ở miền Bắc Việt Nam. Đây là dòng mẹ của một số giống lúa lai của Việt Nam như Việt Lai 20, Việt Lai 24. Gen điều khiển tính trạng bất dục đực của dòng TGMS 103S chưa được xác định. Do đó, nghiên cứu này sử dụng chỉ thị phân tử để xác định gen điều khiển tính trạng bất dục đực của dòng TGMS 103S. Thí nghiệm sử dụng phân tích kiểu hình và kiểu gen ở thế hệ F1và F2 của cặp lai TGMS 103S với R20. Sử dụng phân tích liên kết bằng phần mềm MAPMARKER. Kết quả đã xác định gen tms-103Snằm trên nhiễm sắc thể số 2 và liên kết với các chỉ thị SSR RM3294, RM6378, RM7575và RM71. Những chỉ thị này có thể sử dụng trong chọn giống lúa lai cho chọn lọc MAS tính trạng bất dục đực.

• Breeding of New Maintainer Lines for Development of CMS in Hybrid Rice Breeding in Viet Nam

  In three-line hybrid rice system, the development of new maintainer lines (B lines) suitable to ecological conditions with good characteristics plays an important role. In this study, we had made two combinations,BoB x IR58025B and II32B x IR58025B and applied pedigree method ofselection for short stature plant, short growth duration, high stigma exsertion, pollen abundance and good grain quality. Twenty five and 23 new B lines from BoB x IR58025B and II32B x IR58025B were selected, respectively, in F6 generation in spring season 2012. Those lines showed very good characteristics that are suitable for B lines possessing the desirable traits mentioned above. Crossing these lines with CMS line (IR59025A) showed that most of the lines produced F1 with 100% sterility. Therefore, the new maintener lines can be developed by crossing between two B lines which can be maintained for two types of cytoplasm to develop new CMS background for development of three-line hybrid rice in Viet Nam.

• The Results of Breeding New Aromatic Thermosensitive Genic MaleSterile (TGMS) Line in Rice

  The new E15Sline is thermosensitive genic male sterile line thatwas selected from 135S/Hoasuacrossingby pedigree method. The E15S has short growth duration, leaves numbers 14.1 and good phenotype such as: good tillering, stem and violet awn, long grain. The leaves and endosperm of E15S have aromatic smell mark 4. The critical sterility inducing point (CSIP) of E15S is 240C and high outcrossing ratio. The F1 was crossed between E15S and pollinators which have short growth duration, high yield, good quality and moderated resistance for disease and insects. The results of evaluation on F1 was selected E15S/Huongcom combination that has short growth duration (128 days), high yield (7.4 tons-1ha), milling rice 71.2%, head rice recovery 58.0%, long grain 7.1 mm and aromatic smell mark 3.8.

• Development of Aromatic Thermo-sensitive Genic Male Sterile (TGMS) Lines

  The aromatic thermo-sensitive genic sterile lines were selected from segregating populations ofcrosses between T1S-96 and T7S used as female and pollinators BT7, Basmati 370, Hoa sua and Huongcom using pedigree method of selection. These lines were of sterile type without pollen. All of 23 TGMS lines were genotyped with tms5 while AT19 line had both tms2 and tms5 gene, 22 TGMS lines were genotyped with fgrfgr gene. Five lines (AT1, AT5, AT9, AT24 and AT27) had short growth duration and desirable phenotype. These lines showed good tillering capacity, violet stem andawn, and long grain. The leaves and endosperm of these lines possessed aromatic smell. The critical sterility inducing point (CSIP) of these line are 240C with high outcrossing rate.
