    Abstract

The trials were conducted to evaluate the survival of white-leg shrimp postlarvae (PL12) acclimatized from 15 ppt salinity to freshwater and to determine the growth performance of the acclimatized shrimp cultured in freshwater ponds during winter season in Hung Yen. Three batches of freshwater acclimatization were carried out, each with four 10.5 m3 circular tanks placed outdoor under roof and from 620,000-690,000 PL (150,000-160,000 PL/tank). The salinity reduction rate of 2 ppt per day was set for all trials. The grow-out trial was performed in three earthen ponds (3,000-3,600 m2) with stocking density of 62-67 PL/m2 and pelleted feed (30% CP) for a 18 week-culture period (126 days). High survival rates of acclimatization were found (above 94%) in all of the three batches. The acclimatized shrimp cultured in freshwater ponds during winter showed good growth rate ( 0.79 ± 0.05 g/week); the shrimp reached the size of 14.28 ± 0.58 g/ind after 18 weeks. The survival rates and FCR values at the end of culture period were 83.3 ± 2.2% and 1.35 ± 0.15, respectively. The economic benefit of the grow-out stage was VND 88.7 million /1000 m2 after 4 winter months of culture. The study indicated that white-leg shrimp can be cultured in freshwater ponds during winter with high survival and growth rate in Northern areas of Vietnam.
