Abstract
This study aimed to investigate the species composition and density of zooplankton in super-intensive whiteleg shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei) ponds in Ca Mau province. Zooplankton samples were collected from 6 shrimp ponds, including 3 ponds with densities of 150-200 individuals/m³ (A1) and 3 ponds with densities of 250-350 individuals/m³ (A2). A total of 10 sampling periods were conducted, with sampling every 7 days throughout the shrimp farming crop. The research found 32 species of zooplankton. Protozoa had the most species (10), followed by Copepoda (9), and the other groups had between 5 and 8 species. The zooplankton species composition did not differ significantly between the two different shrimp farming densities. However, the average zooplankton abundance in group A1 was lower than that in A2 across the sampling periods. Shrimp ponds had lower zooplankton densities compared to the inlet canal. The average zooplankton densities of groups A1, A2, and the inlet canal varied from 106,722 ± 85,564 individuals/m³, 148,196 ± 154,457 individuals/m³, and 303,148 ± 130,721 individuals/m³, respectively. Zooplankton species diversity ranged from low to medium. The results also indicated that water quality parameters influenced the distribution of zooplankton in the shrimp ponds.
